How to Repair Asphalt Driveway Cracks?

Asphalt is one of the most common material used for paving driveways. And asphalt driveways can develop cracks and dips over time. It’s important to fix cracks timely to protect the durability and appearance of our driveway. Fortunately, fixing cracks in an asphalt driveway is now very a simple process that only requires a few equipment and materials, which we can provide a package solution.


What causes a crack? The most frequent cause of cracks in asphalt driveway is water that has seeped below the surface and expanded or contracted with freezing and thawing temperatures. The other reason of crack the sun. The sun causes the asphalt to dry out, the dryness, along with chemicals, oil, and dirt will deteriorate the asphalt’s surface. The UV sun rays are constantly shining down on the asphalt and it can no longer expand, so it cracks instead. Heavy traffic can cause also cause the asphalt to crack.


Preparation for sealing the cracks

  • Before patching the crack, it's important for the affected area to be clean and smooth so that the patching material can adhere strongly. 
  • You should groove the crack to certain width so the material can flow in the crack by gravity. 
  • Next, use a hot air lance to remove moisture, dirt and debris from the crack. 
  • Whatever you use to clean the crack, please wear safety goggles to prevent and debris from harming your eyes. 

Once you have cleaned the crack in the asphalt thoroughly, you are ready to begin filling the crack. Be aware that smaller and larger cracks require different patching materials.


Sealing Smaller Cracks in Asphalt (≤2 cm) 

  • To fill smaller cracks you can use rubberized asphalt crack sealant. 
  • And apply the sealant using a crack sealing machine. 
  • Let the filler dry according to the instructions on the packaging before opening to the traffic. 


Filling Larger Cracks in Asphalt (>2 cm) 

  • If the crack you are trying to patch is wide and deep, you may need to first fill the crack with small, crushed, angular gravel.  
  • Next, you should compact the gravel by using a compactor. And fill the crack with asphalt repair compound, compact the compound,
  • After compacting, you may need to add more blacktop or compound material and repeat the tamping process to ensure a consistent, level driveway. 

While the surface blacktop will dry in a day or so, the blacktop beneath may take a few weeks to completely harden.
